Breaking BAS. What’s Our WHY?
I’ve read enough books that tell me to know what my ‘why’ is. My why for having this business. My why for getting up in the morning to take part in it. My why for sticking with it through the difficult times.
Basically my purpose.
So I started thinking about it.
As a psychologist (in my previous business life) meaning and purpose were built into my job. I was helping people to live better lives, heal past wounds and overcome trauma.
So I was a bit confused when I started thinking about the purpose of this business. But here’s how it went.
It started like this:
My partner is a business coach for tradies.
I hear about the frustrations his clients have –
- not enough time
- wasting time doing stuff someone else should be doing
- not getting to the money-making things because they’re doing admin instead
So our purpose: to provide a solution to the time and admin problems
It’s actually that simple.
I thought it had to be a big, meaningful, ‘save the world’ kind of purpose.
But that’s it: provide a solution to the time and admin problems for tradies.
And that’s actually quite meaningful when you think about what that gets you:
- time with your family or friends you didn’t have before
- time for your favourite weekend things
- a business that isn’t slowly killing you
So on the days when things go wrong, I remind myself that this is what we’re here for. And that makes everything better
